Tell us a bit about yourself:

My name is Sr. Elfinesh Zergena, and I was born and raised in Afama Adil, Boloso Sore Woreda, Wolayta Zone, in southern Ethiopia. I have been with the Missionary Sisters since 2003 when I began my formation journey; before that, I was a High School student. In 2016, I made my Perpetual Vows.

Why I chose the MSCs:

When the Sisters first came to Ethiopia, it was their endeavours in helping the poor, and working in parish pastoral activities that attracted to me towards joining them in Religious Life.

About my family:

My father died suddenly in an accident when I was a First-Year Novice. My mother is still alive and lives near Areka. I have 5 brothers and 5 sisters.

My ministry is in Education and pastoral work. Currently, I teach at the St. Gabriel Pre-school in Wallacha, which is about an hour by car from Dubbo Mission. I am also active in the St. Gabriel Parish in activities with the youth and also visiting the sick in their homes. From 2016 – 2018, I was sent to our St. Francesca Cabrini School in London, where I assisted the teachers, and also learned many things about education standards and methods. It was a wonderful experience!

My hopes & dreams for HSR:

I hope more young women will be inspired and courageous to respond to the call of Jesus, and follow Him as a Missionary Sister of the Sacred Heart, giving themselves generously to spread the love of Christ in the world. My dream for the future is that I, and all of us in Holy Spirit Region, Sisters and Laity, will live and share the charism gifted through Mother Cabrini more and more prophetically.

Thanks to Sr. Elfinesh for sharing her story.
