On the 26th of April the donation of one and a half hectares of land to the aboriginal community of Barrio Toba Cacique Francisco Moreno- QOM – (Department of Rosario – Santa Fe) was signed. On September 18, 1985, on the initiative of Sister Regina Ardissone and the Union of Parents of the “Mother Cabrini” School of Rosario, with the support of the Institute – Superior General Sr. Maria Barbagallo MSC – two and a half hectares were purchased in Granadero Baigorria – located 30 km from Rosario – making it possible to work with this Community of Indigenous Tobas from the Province of Chaco (Argentina). Five houses were built and weekly members of the school, Sister Regina, teachers, students and parents came to train them and to transmit to them values and habits of hygiene, order, etc.
Every year they held a “handicraft fair” in the school itself where they sold their handicrafts and it was a way of earning a little money while taking responsibility for their upkeep. In 2008 – one hectare of the total was donated to the Municipality of Granadero Baigorria to continue looking after the community. Last year the General Council received a letter from the Provincial Superior Ir. Eliane Azevedo da Silva and Ms. Gabriela Aravel, legal representative of the “Mother Cabrini” School of Rosario, presented a request from the Civil Association Matricia (NGO) – (face and Instagram @matriciaorg), an organization that works in the community development of “empowered” populations through strategies of triple impact: social, economic and environmental. This association has asked for the possibility of the donation of the other hectare also for the Toba community itself; this since the EU has offered the possibility of presenting a proposal on the formation of an organic garden for which they would allocate (provided they meet the requirements) a considerable amount of money. As a General Council we approved this proposal and after completing all the procedures, this donation became a reality with the signing of the corresponding deed in favour of the QOM Community. It was indeed a very emotional moment, in the act of signing were present the current Cacique, the son of the first Cacique who was born when the Institute obtained those hectares – and he said: “I imagine how happy my parents will be from heaven looking at this precious moment”, Dr. Angel Francisco Cerávolo, notary for the Columbus Association and Sister Stella. This community currently consists of 35 families. Sister Stella believes that this is the first and only donation the Congregation has ever made to a Community of Original Peoples.
