His Eminence Blase, Cardinal Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago, for the benefit of the souls entrusted to his pastoral care petitioned the Apostolic Penitentiary of His Holiness Pope Francis the Bishop of Rome for the grace and favor of a special Jubilee Year in honor of the 75th Anniversary of the Canonization of Saint Frances Xavier
Cabrini, and requesting the privilege of the Plenary Indulgence for the duration of the year, from 13 November 2021 through 13 November 2022.
On August 24, 2021 His Eminence Mauro, Cardinal Piacenza the Major Penitentiary of His Holiness Pope Francis granted the request and has declared this special Jubilee Year to begin with this solemn
liturgy today, Saturday November 13, 2021 at the National Shrine of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini in Chicago.
The requested Jubilee Plenary Indulgence – offered to those faithful who are disposed to do so by fulfilling the usual conditions – is granted whenever they pilgrimage to this National Shrine, offer prayers for the Holy Father, for their deceased loved ones, and for themselves.
This Jubilee Year privilege is hereby extended to Holy Name Cathedral in order that Our Lord’s merciful love, and the joy of the Gospel be lavishly distributed to all who come to be inspired by the life and vision of this uniquely American Saint, Frances Xavier Cabrini.
The elderly, the sick and all those who, for grave reasons, cannot leave their homes may also obtain the Plenary Indulgence, having expressed the resolution to detach themselves from all sin and the intention to fulfil, as soon as possible, the three customary conditions, if they are spiritually united to the celebrations or pilgrimages, by offering their prayers, sufferings or the hardships of their lives to the mercy of God by the hand of Mary.
Finally, in order that pastoral charity may spread more easily, in order to obtain divine forgiveness by means of the keys of the Church, this Penitentiary asks with great solicitude that the priests of the National Shrine of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini and Holy Name Cathedral offer themselves with ready and generous hearts to the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance and always administer communion to the sick.
